Going natural seems to be the theme of the year. I’m cutting out the hair dye and letting my hair breathe for a bit, bleach free. I’m trying to reduce the amount of plastic-wrapped goods I buy in the supermarket and signed a petition to eradicate it from our grocery aisles. (The one I signed was a UK .gov one and it’s since closed but you can sign this Greenpeace one.) And I’m teaching myself to embrace a new normal as we head into autumn, in which a walk to the playground in torrential downpour is the norm.

To round off a summer of exciting excursions, we drove the three hours down to Brighton where some of our friends from university live, and to show little J the sea for the first time!

Staycations have been all the rage this year, thanks to the global pandemic, and to be honest I’m glad we can leave the house at all. My lovely in-laws decided to ‘escape’ their idyllic home in the countryside to go visiting some touristy places on the east coast, leaving behind their beautiful and friendly eight year old cat, Arthur, for us to cat sit. They live a couple of hours away, and with the amount of stuff we loaded into the car, it certainly felt like going on holiday for a week!

For my mum’s birthday this year, my sister and I decided to treat her to a weekend away (with us and my husband and baby) to escape into the countryside, forget her troubles, and have dinners cooked over a fire! What could be more hygge than a close-knit group talking around a campfire?

Upon first reading this book, I thought that it was nicely written, positively affirming, but didn’t really tell me much I didn’t already know from reading other books. Until, that is, I reached Part 5. Bear in mind that Parts 5 and 6 are half the book in themselves.

I was completely inspired by The Little Book of Hygge and I’m not afraid to admit it. The way I grew up, I thought that a small town life with a couple of close friends and evenings in playing games rather than fancy nights out was maybe, well, a bit dull! I liked it, but did that make me a boring person? Actually no. In Denmark, that sort of a cosy night in with loved ones and good conversations is praised as being totally hygge (pronounced hyoo-gah).

I cannot recommend hypnobirthing enough. Yes it sounds like some crazy hippie stuff, but it’s not. Forget the name, all you need to know is that I gave birth to a 9lbs baby at home with no drugs and it was a positive experience, thanks to hypnobirthing. This book is where I got started.

This book and the discovery of ‘Aha moments’ was a revelation to me. I cannot recommend it enough. I recently read this book again for the third time. Having read it during pregnancy and since J was born, I am returning to it again and again for the best advice I have found so far.
