Upon first reading this book, I thought that it was nicely written, positively affirming, but didn’t really tell me much I didn’t already know from reading other books. Until, that is, I reached Part 5. Bear in mind that Parts 5 and 6 are half the book in themselves.

I was completely inspired by The Little Book of Hygge and I’m not afraid to admit it. The way I grew up, I thought that a small town life with a couple of close friends and evenings in playing games rather than fancy nights out was maybe, well, a bit dull! I liked it, but did that make me a boring person? Actually no. In Denmark, that sort of a cosy night in with loved ones and good conversations is praised as being totally hygge (pronounced hyoo-gah).

I cannot recommend hypnobirthing enough. Yes it sounds like some crazy hippie stuff, but it’s not. Forget the name, all you need to know is that I gave birth to a 9lbs baby at home with no drugs and it was a positive experience, thanks to hypnobirthing. This book is where I got started.

This book and the discovery of ‘Aha moments’ was a revelation to me. I cannot recommend it enough. I recently read this book again for the third time. Having read it during pregnancy and since J was born, I am returning to it again and again for the best advice I have found so far.

Letting Go as Children Grow

Book Reviews, Child-led Life

The first time I read Letting Go As Children Grow was before having little J and I found it quite interesting. Having read more books on parenting styles and attachment parenting in particular, I returned to this book and just devoured it the second time around. It is full of real world experiences, examples on how to implement the book’s advice, and actual modern scientific studies to back up all of the advice given.

Every baby’s mother or primary guardian needs to read this book. I found it eye opening. I wasn’t a bad person for feeling bored! In fact, when I feel like I’ve done nothing all day but try to keep baby J alive, dry, full and not crying, I have actually had a full busy day of mothering. It sounds simple but the psychology behind why some of us find it so hard to adjust is fascinating.

I have to start by stating the obvious: there is no sleep solution. To claim that there is a definitive way to get your baby to sleep time and time again without fuss or tears, regardless of your child’s own personality or experiences to date is clearly a fallacy, because if it were true, everyone would do it. However, ‘Here are some excellent tips that may or may not help you get your baby to sleep’ just would not sell.

The revised edition of John Holt’s Teach Your Own by Pat Farenga is almost twenty years old and still much of it rings true. This version has almost 50% of the text in Pat’s personal notes, commenting on and supplementing the original work by the father of the unschooling movement, and it brings another dimension (and the perspective of an unschooling parent) to John’s work.
